- Story Text: The first leg of the African Cup Winner's Cup soccer tittle between Nigeria's IICC Shooting of Ibadan and the Cameroun side Tonnerre Kalala of Yaounde took place in Lagos on Saturday (27 November).
SYNOPSIS: 40,000 Nigerians had a rousing reception ready for their side in Lagos National Stadium - and they were soon rewarded.
The Shooting States playing from right to left in the darker striped shirts pressed forward from the outset.
With just two minutes gone Tonnerre gave away this throw. It did not seem to dangerous, but Tonnerre's defence was caught unawares by the length of Moses Otolorin's throw, and Sesun Odegbami outleapt everyone to give the Shooting Stars a magnificent start.
Tonnerre equalized immediately-inside-left Pierre Owona Fouda seizing a low free-kick on the left.
Shooting Stars returned to the attack determined to regain their early advantage. They scored again when Philip Boamah finished off a good movement ten minutes later but they knew they must get at least two goals ahead in this first leg in Lagos to give themselves a safe lead to defend when they play the return leg at Tonnerr's home ground in Yaounde, Cameroun, in two weeks time. But at this stage in the game, Tonnerre were moving the more fluidly of the two sides.
In the second half Moses Otolorin caused more trouble with his long throw-ins.
For 20 minutes Tonnerre kept the Shooting Star's lead down to one goal. Milla began to stimulate Tonnerre's attack into action, but in a swift counter attack Shooting Stars struck. Boamah, who had been substituted for Folorunsho Gambari, had the home crowd wondering why he had no been brought on earlier when he beat two defenders on the goal-line to set up this easy goal for Otolorin.
When Tonnerre did get into dangerous positions Stars' goalkeeper Best Ogedegbe proved equal to the challenger. With a two goal lead sage in the bag, Stars were looking more assured - and they scored again when Tonnerre goalkeeper Mboyong let a 30 yard shot from Otolorin slip past. With a three goal lead, over confidence in the return match in Cameroun should be the only thing between Shooting Stars and the African Cup Winners Cup.
