Summary:Francisco Franco, dictator of Spain for 36 years, died at the age of 83 on November 20 1975. Franco joined the army in 1907 and became a national hero for his subjugation of rebels in Morocco. Political crisis in Spain brought him into the revolutionary movement and to the head of Nationalist forces in the Spanish civil war. By 1939 he was master of Spain. He kept his country neutral during World War II, but his power was slipping away by the time he died.
