- Story Text: President Boris Yeltsin has arrived in Stockholm for the first Russian state visit to Sweden since 1909, with Baltic security and trade on the agenda.
One of the main purposes of Tuesday's (December 2) visit was for Yeltsin to seek help from Sweden in improving Russia's relationship with the Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, under Soviet occupation for nearly half a century until 1991 and under Russian rule for most of the previous two centuries.
Before that Sweden was the dominant power in the Baltic.
The three Baltic states all have significant Russian minorities and are intensely suspicious of the Kremlin's intentions and jealous of their newly-won independence.
The trade relationship between Sweden and Russia has intensified since 1991 with Russian statistics listing Sweden as its seventh largest foreign investor in 1996.
Yeltsin has bought with him First Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov, one of Russia's top economic reformers, and around 300 Russian business leaders.
After a short airport ceremony, the Russian President was taken to a state reception with Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
During the afternoon Yeltsin was expected to sign about eight bilateral agreements concerning economic cooperation, trade and measures to combat crime.
