Summary:The Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova had pioneered space flight for women and some 31 scientists, engineers and Air Force personnel had been selected by the United States space agency, NASA, for space training. However, it was revealed that Tereshkova had suffered badly on her space mission. The Soviet space programme dropped women cosmonauts - and these American trainees never made it to the launch pad.
