- Story Text: Students at Thailand's Thammasat University in Bangkok boycotted their classes on Sunday (10 August) to stage a demonstration protesting against the arrest of nine farmers and student activists on charges of kidnapping and arson.
The students are demanding the "unconditional and immediate release" of the nine, who were detained in northern Thailand by security forces.
According to reports from Bangkok, the arrests followed the death of nine farmers in the north of Thailand since April. But Thai government officials were reported to have declined to specify if those now detained were connected with the deaths.
Meanwhile the government has been meeting in emergency sessions to discuss the situation. Thai Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj is reported to be planning to appear on television to explain the government's action.
The latest demonstrations come against a background of protests in July, when several thousand students staged demonstrations against the United States military presence in Thailand.
