Summary:In April the first nationwide general elections for more than 30 years were held. In Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, 44 candidates campaigned for 35 seats. Campaigning in Hanoi was equally intense, nearly a million residents voted for the first common National Assembly for North and South Vietnam. The new Assembly will have the task of further unifying a country divided for almost a hundred years.
