- Story Text: Just when you thought you'd seen it all - along comes Sarah Palin, the Cabbage Patch doll. Cabbage Patch Kids have released four custom-made, one-of-a-kind Cabbage Patch Kids resembling the 2008 US presidential and vice presidential candidates Barack Obama, John McCain, Sarah Palin and Joe Biden.
The four dolls are up for auction on eBAY and all proceeds will be given to the Toys for Tots charity to help needy children across America.
The dolls were commissioned by eBay and were designed to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Cabbage Patch Kids and the 2008 U.S. Presidential election.
"It's been such a vibrant election and Cabbage Patch Kids are such an iconic toy, that we figured, why not marry the two together? What a great combination it would be to celebrate this anniversary as well as the election. So we approached them and said, what do you think about creating these dolls? They were game and they came out really fabulous," said eBay Pop Culture expert, Karen Bard.
Bidding began at 1300 (GMT) on Thursday October 30, and will end at 1200 (GMT) on Election Day, Tuesday November 4. The Sarah Palin doll has so far proved the most popular amongst bidders, with the latest offer set at 3,650 dollars (USD). Just as it is in the opinion polls, the Barack Obama and John McCain dolls are neck and neck, with bidding at 1,075 dollars (USD) for Obama, and 1,025 dollars (USD) for McCain. Bidders don't appear to be all that interested in the Joe Biden doll, at just 610 dollars (USD).
Ebay's Karen Bard said public response to the auction had been overwhelming.
"It's been absolutely incredible - we have seen just a huge number of bids in the last 24 hours. The Sarah Palin doll's already up to 36 hundred, which is phenomenal," Bard said.
If Cabbage Patch dolls aren't your thing there is plenty of other political memorabilia up for sale - including a 'Joe the Plumber' t-shirt, Barack Obama plastic toys, and a singing John McCain doll.
