- Story Text: American black leader Louis Farrakhan visited Turkey at the invitation of Necmettin Erbakan's Welfare Party on February 18.
At a news conference in Ankara, Farrakhan, who heads the Nation of Islam movement in the United States (U.S.), answered questions about the U.S. State Department's criticism of his recent visits to Iran. Iraq and Libya.
Farrakhan said he was not a political leader but a free black man who could travel wherever he wished and meet whom he wished. He said he had been on a mission of reconciliation when he had visited the three nations.
The State Department had objected to Farrakhan's remark in Baghdad that Washington's policies were leading to "mass murder" of Iraqi people. Earlier it had accused Farrakhan of "cavorting with dictators" in Libya and Iran.
Accompanying Farrakhan on his visit to Turkey at the invitation of the Islamist Turkish party was the black leader's son, Mustafa. Farrakhan introduced his son as his security chief.
