- Story Text: A Chrysler jeep rolled off a Thai production line on Thursday (September 21), becoming the first ever American car assembled in the country.
Thai Chrysler Automotive Ltd, a joint venture between Chrysler International with a 30 per cent stake, and Swedish Motors with the remainder, unveiled its first home-produced jeep at its 200 million baht assembly plant in an eastern Bangkok suburb.
Company executives said they were encouraged by the almost 20 percent growth in vehicle sales a year in Thailand.
"We consider it the biggest market in the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) area. The potential is almost unlimited," said William Klingler, director of regional operations for Chrysler International.
The plant will produce some 2,500 jeeps next year and is considering expanding production to include pick-up trucks, Klingler said. The new plant, which uses more than 50 per cent Thai-produced components, was part of Chrysler's move into the international market, he said.
Total car sales in Thailand this year are expected to be around 500,000 units with Toyota leading the market with an estimated 27 percent share, according to the Thai Automotive Industry Association.
