Summary:Violence flared in the Korean Demilitarised Zone during August when a contingent of North Korean guards attacked a South Korean work-force on a routine tree-felling mission. The South Koreans were being supervised by two white-helmeted American officers serving with the United Nations as they trimmed branches from a tree which was obscuring an observation post. The Americans were killed by axes and clubs and several South Koreans were badly injured.
