- Story Text: Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia have arrived in Athens as part of a week long official visit to Greece.
The royal couple had a red carpet welcome as they arrived at the presidential palace on Monday (May 25).A band played Spain's national anthem and traditional Greek evzones stood at attention.
They were greeted by Greek president Costis Stephanopoulos and prime minister Costas Simitis, as well as other Greek officials.
The couple were later due to visit the graveyard at the former royal palace where ex-King Constantine, Sophia's brother once resided and where Sophia's mother is buried.
They are also scheduled to visit ancient Olympia and the northern city of Thessaloniki during their stay.
Greek and Spanish officials are eager to make the May 25-28 visit to Greece, a largely anti-monarchist country, a success and spare it the anti-royalist protests that have marked previous private visits by Sophia's brother, deposed King Constantine.
It is the first official visit for Sophia since Constantine fled the country in 1967.She has only returned privately once -- for just five hours, to bury her mother, Queen Frederika, in 1981.The funeral itself drew heated protests at the time.
