- Story Text: Beauty queen Alexandra Vodjanikova, who arrived in
Baghdad to show solidarity with the people of Iraq, has begun
her peace mission by visiting the ancient city of Babylon.
German pacifists have recruited Miss Deutschland to
protest a looming U.S.-led war against Iraq. German beauty
queen Alexandra Vodjanikova flew into Baghdad on Thursday
(February 20) and immediately declared she wanted to meet
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to try to avert war.
The 19 year old told reporters at Saddam International
Airport that she also intended to visit hospitals and meet
Iraqi children as part of her peace mission to the region.
Vodjanikova joins a growing number of peace activists from
Europe already in Baghdad.
On Friday (February 21) Vodjanikova visited the ancient
city of Babylon, 90 km south of Baghdad. During her tour of
Babylon the German beauty queen met Iraqi children enjoying
their Friday picnic. She also spent time at the Babylon ruins
and the local museum.
Babylon figures prominently in scripture writings and
ancient traveller accounts describing its former wealth and
magnificence. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the
seven wonders of the ancient world.
