- Story Text: Heavyweights battle it out for the annual Miss Jumbo
Queen 2005 competition in Thailand.
It's a place where size matters: Thailand is once
again staging the annual Miss Jumbo Queen pageant. A total
of 24 heavy-weight contestants battled it for the crown
out on Sunday (May 1) in front of hundreds of spectators.
The beauty contest, now in its ninth year, allows full
sized women weighing over 80 kilograms to strut their stuff
down the runway and show weight-conscious Thais that after
all, big is beautiful.
The event is held at the Samphran Elephant Ground and
Zoo, 60 kilometers west of the capital Bangkok, and also
provides an original way of raising money to protect
Thailand's elephants.
Backstage, the dressing room was an explosion of
hairspray and makeup with contestants juggling an
extravagant number of costume changes. Glitter and feathers
were the order of the day with a popular Thai designer
creating the outfits for the buxom ladies.
Twenty-five-year-old business student Wilaiporn Sarapin
was one of the lightest contestants at the pageant,
weighing only 86 kilograms. She says in an era where the
world reveres stick-thin models, she wants to be a role
model for heavier women.
"I'm so glad to be participating here and I'm taking
part to show that fat women also have talents," she said.
While size does matter, the contestants insist they are
not just being judged on their vuluptuous bodies and pretty
faces.
"I never dance before and this contest, I must sing and
dance," said 18-year-old Kemika Sookprasongdee.
Contestants put their full weight behind the talent
show, mesmerising the audience with raunchy dance numbers,
a cabaret show and self-defence lessons.
In keeping with Jumbo tradition, the Miss Jumbo
Universe award went to university student Thanchanok
Mekkeaw, for being the the heaviest competitor in the
pageant at 182 kilograms.
But not satisfied with her prize, 25-year-old
Thanchanok has vowed to compete again in the contest until
she takes home the coveted Miss Jumbo Queen trophy.
That award went to 18-year-old Tarnrarin Chansawang,
one of the youngest contestants in the pageant.
Wearing her new diamonte-studded crown, Tarnrarin says
her achievement should be a lesson to robust women around
the world that beauty is more than skin deep.
