- Story Text: Danes welcomed the news of the country's Australian-born Crown Princess Mary's pregnancy on Friday (October 27).
On Thursday (October 26), the Danish royal court announced that Mary and Crown Prince Frederik, heir to the throne, are expecting their second child by the beginning of May.
"Their Royal Highnesses The Crown Prince and Crown Princess are happy to announce the pregnancy of Crown Princess Mary," the court said in a statement.
Danish newspapers bannered the pregnancy and people living in the Danish city of Odense, home of fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, welcomed the news.
"We heard it yesterday on television, we saw it. We think it's lovely because when two people love each other, whether they are Crown Princess or whatever, it's wonderful that they're having a new one," said Jette.
"It's very well. I think it's good for the family, for the Royal family and for all the Danes. I have four children myself so I wish them happiness," said Lars as he took visitors to the city's main tourist attraction, Hans Christian Andersen's house.
"It was great news, yes. And I wish them the best of luck for all," said Bente who works in one of the shops in the tourist area.
The princess, 34, was Mary Donaldson, a real estate agent from Tasmania, until she married Frederik in May 2004 after a romance that began when they met in a Sydney bar during the 2000 Olympics.
Frederik's mother Queen Margrethe and the royal family are highly popular in Denmark. Said to be Europe's oldest royal house, their lineage dates back to the Viking king Gorm the Old, who died in 958.
The Crown Princess will continue to fulfil her official duties as long as possible, the court said.
