- Story Text: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Catherine, visited a hospice in Malaysia's capital on Thursday (September 13).
Malaysia is the second stop on their Diamond Jubilee tour in Asia Pacific to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.
Prince William and Kate earlier attended a lunch hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak after touching down at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at noon.
The royal couple then visited a hospice in Kuala Lumpur where the Duchess of Cambridge delivered her first speech abroad.
Their visit was highly anticipated by local residents.
"Seeing Prince William and the wife Kate is like a once in a lifetime chance, so that's why I cannot afford to miss this chance," said a 21-year-old Malaysian Evelyn Tay Suet May.
Kate is also the Royal Patron of UK East Anglia's Children's Hospices - a non-profitable medical centre providing palliative care for patients with critical, life-limiting illness.
"I think to be selected as a cause for such a visit, for her first speech (overseas), shows the importance of palliative care is held by the Duchess. And I think also by people perhaps some other countries. It is very significant that we have such an important moment in 'Hospis Malaysia'," said Ednin Hamzah, medical director of the centre.
This is the first visit by British royals to Malaysia in 14 years. The last visit was made by Queen Elizabeth II in September 1998.
Prince William and his wife Catherine will stay in Kuala Lumpur for two days before departing for a visit to a rainforest reserve in Sabah state on Borneo island on Saturday (September 15). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
