Summary:December 16 1976 - former congressman Andrew Young was appointed US Ambassador to the United Nations by newly-elected President Carter. Young, 44, was a long time supporter of Carter and was crucial in bringing many black votes to him in the election. He was a Civil Rights campaigner from the 1960's and later proved himself a skilful and articulate politician.
