- Story Text: - INTRO: U.S. Vice President Al Gore has met South African President Nelson Mandela in Cape Town and toured the island prison where he was incarcerated for 18 years.
Vice-President Gore met Mandela for talks at his residence in Cape Town on Sunday (February 16).
As the two men posed for news cameras on the steps of the residence, Gore told reporters that Mandela's endurance of his prison experience had been a "triumph of the human spirit." Gore is in South Africa for talks aimed at improving cooperation between the two countries on trade, education, health, the energy and the environment.
Earlier, Gore, his wife Tipper and two of their children boarded a boat for the 30-minute ride from Cape Town to Robben Island, where Mandela was held for 18 years.
Gore's host on the tour was South Africa's Deputy President Thabo Mbeki, whose father Govan Mbeki was imprisoned in the next cell to Mandela.
Gore was also shown around the cells by Ahmed Kathrada, who spent 21 years in the prison.
Gore and his family crowded into cell number five, a concerete room barely big enough for a bed, where Mandela spent many years.
Gore viewed the quarry where Mandela and other prisoners hacked out tons of rock under the hot African sun.
Mandela spent 18 years in Robben Island after being convicted of treason by the country's white supremacist rulers in 1963. He spent another eight years at a mainland prison before being released in 1990. He was elected president in South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994.
