- Story Text: Chadian President Hissene Habre was reported dead on Sunday (December 2nd) by the Libyan official news agency JANA, which said he had been killed during an attempt to escape with a group of aides from the capital N'Djamena.
The report, which could not be independently confirmed, said Habre had died in an area between Tina and Umm Saaloub following his defeat by the forces of rebel leader Idriss Deby.
Idriss Deby moved into N'Djamena in a black Mercedes on Sunday escorted by 20 all-terrain vehicles and headed for the Place de Martyrs where people had gathered awaiting his arrival. Meanwhile, Deby's second in command, Bada Maldom who is vice president of the Patriotic Salvation Front, held talks with Chad's remaining civilian leadership.
In 1982 Deby helped Habre to oust former President Goukouni Oueddei from power. Deby served as Habre's defence minister until 1989 when he was accused of plotting a coup. - Copyright Holder: FILE REUTERS (CAN SELL)
