  • Story Text: Chinese B-League team Gansu Tianma, perturbed by the
    unexplained absence of British player-coach Paul Gascoigne,
    have asked the national governing body to investigate what
    they consider a breach of contract.



    Gansu Tianma general manager Zhang Tongpo said on Moday
    (June 30, 2003) that the case had been reported to the China
    Football Association, who will contact the English Football
    Association on Gascoigne's responsibility for violating his
    contract.

    The 36-year-old former England midfielder, who entered an
    Arizona clinic in April after suffering from depression,
    signed a one-year renewable contract with Gansu Tianma in
    January.

    He was due to return from the United States on June 10,
    but the club has been unable to contact him directly.

    Zhang said Gansu Tianma had not paid Gascoigne for
    "commercial development" activities because he was not around
    to participate in them.

    The club had already sent two letters to Gascoigne's
    agent, Wes Saunders, requesting the player's return, but Zhang
    said he had not been helpful.

    Gascoigne won 57 caps for his country and helped England
    reach the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup. His career has
    been affected by injuries, a volatile temper and sporadic
    bouts of heavy drinking.
