- Story Text: Charles' Trenet's family, friends and admirers bid a
fond farewell to the legendary French singer at a funeral
ceremony in Paris's La Madeleine church on Friday (February
23).
The singer-composer died on February 19 after suffering a
stroke. He was 87 years old.
Some 4,000 people gathered behind the police barriers
surrounding the Madeleine church from where transmitted the
ceremony to the crowd on the street.
Personalities from both politics and showbusiness attended
the funeral, including Prime Minister Lionel Jospin, singer
Charles Aznavour and actor Jean-Claude Brialy.
Trenet's body was due to be cremated at the Pere Lachaise
cemetery later in the day, then transported to Narbonne, his
hometown in southeastern France, where a ceremony will be held
on Monday. Trenet will be buried alongside his mother.
Trenet wrote almost 1,000 songs, including the haunting
classic "La Mer" (The Sea), which captured the sadness of the
defeat of France early in World War Two.
"Douce France" (Gentle France), a sentimental tribute to
the country he loved, acquired a status rivalling that of La
Marseillaise, the national anthem.
With a blend of American jazz phrasing and zany lyrics,
Trenet was one of the first French entertainers to take
advantage of radio as a mass medium in the years before World
War Two.
When he appeared live he was mobbed by fans in a way that
foreshadowed the Beatlemania of the 1960s. His popularity
endured and in November 1999 he briefly came out of retirement
for three sell-out concerts in Paris.
Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and bandleaders Duke
Ellington and Louis Armstrong recorded versions of his songs.
