Summary:June 2, 1953 - and in London's Westminster Abbey, the crowning moment for the young Queen Elizabeth II. At the time of her coronation, she was 27, having succeeded to the throne the previous year on the death of her father, George VI. Amid the breathtaking splendour of this ancient ceremony, the Queen's consort, Prince Philip, paid his homage. In 1977, after 25 years on the throne, Britain's Jubilee celebrations showed how the monarchy had mellowed. Queen Elizabeth was now happy to walk among her people in a manner unthinkable 25 years before and hundreds of thousands of her subjects turned out to cheer her in a remarkable demonstration of affection for their Queen.
