Summary:Werner von Braun, mastermind behind the US space programme, died on June 16 1977 at the age of 64. He began his work during World War II, developing the German V-2 rocket. With the collapse of Nazi Germany, von Braun took his team to the USA. When President Kennedy called for the programme to land an American on the Moon by the end of the 1960's, it was the brilliant von Braun who provided the Saturn rocket which powered the project.
