- Story Text: German President Horst Koehler honours the national women's soccer team following their World Cup title in China earlier this year.
German President Horst Koehler honoured the national women's soccer team with the country's highest sports award, the Silver Bay Leaf, during a ceremony in Berlin on Wednesday (December 5).
Following the team's 2-0 win over Brazil to retain the World Cup title in China last September, Koehler and German Interior and Sports Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble presented the team with the medal, which honours athletes who repeatedly gain international victories.
The German women's soccer team has won the World Cup twice and the European Championship six times, making them one of the world's most successful women soccer teams.
The country's men soccer team received the same award in August 2006 after the country hosted the World Cup finals. Germany finished third in that World Cup. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
