- Story Text: Colombian singer Shakira on Friday (April 13) brought a feel-good factor to the Summit of the Americas, drawing the only standing ovation of the day after appealing for corporate support for her children's charity.
"I have proven that each dollar and every effort invested in schools and education programmes simply give results, nobody likes to waste time and money, and neither do I. I love to dedicate my time and money and my efforts to promoting education in the same way that I like to make music," Shakira said in her address to the business summit.
Shakira was speaking on the sidelines of the summit in which some 33 leaders from North and South America are set to take part in the Cartagena meeting which is expected to mix perennial controversies over Cuba and the Falklands with trade tensions and a new look at the war on drugs.
Away from the serious issues, there was plenty to entertain the thousands of visitors to Cartagena: from sun-kissed beaches and local dance troupes, to a soccer match on Friday afternoon between teams led by presidents Santos and Morales.
Santos' team emerged victorious after Morales missed a penalty.
"It was very good, he's a great goalkeeper. It was great, I'm very happy," said Morales after the match. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
