- Story Text: Manchester United and Mexico international striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez on Saturday (May 26) was named a UNICEF national ambassador at a ceremony in Mexico City.
Prior to the ceremony, Hernandez met with a group of young Mexicans to discuss issues which affect their development, such as poverty and education.
"The most important thing here is UNICEF, and helping. I came here to help. I came to do what I can to help. For example, these children that are here today, and in many other parts of our country. That's the most important thing. It isn't just that Chicharito works here, or Ms. Susana (Sottoli), the entire organization is working. We must be very, very positive and concentrate on helping. As long as we have good intentions I think our country can help," Hernandez said at the ceremony.
UNICEF's representative in Mexico, Susana Sottoli, said that Hernandez could potentially help promote the agenda of young people in Mexico.
"Without a doubt, including Javier in the group of personalities that are goodwill ambassadors at a global level and in Mexico, will help not only to push the agenda of children in Mexico, but also will definitely help, with his will and his promise, to make sure this agenda turns into concrete actions," she said.
At the ceremony, Hernandez and Sottoli also unveiled a painting of the young soccer star.
UNICEF currently has over 300 international and national ambassadors, which include actors, athletes, and musicians.
In addition to Hernandez, two other Mexicans have been named national ambassadors. In 2004, Mexican actor and singer Cesar Costa was named national ambassador, and was followed by singer Julieta Venegas in 2009.
In 2010, Hernandez became the first Mexican soccer player to join Manchester United. Additionally, he has represented Mexico at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and was the top scorer at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup held in the United States. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
