- Story Text: Ecuador and Trinidad and Tobago played to a 0-0 draw Saturday (November 8) afternoon in the first match of a qualifying playoff series for the upcoming Women's World Cup.
The two sides met at the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium in Quito in the first of two meetings to decide who will earn a berth in next summer's Women's World Cup.
In the lead-up to the game, Ecuadorian coach Vanessa Arauz had her team focus on the opponent's strength.
"We've been focusing (in practice) on free kicks, and obviously to try and prevent Trinidad and Tobago from getting free kicks, as that is their greatest strength. Up until now, things have not come out the best for us," she told reporters following a practice session.
Trinidad and Tobago is trying to become the first side from the Caribbean to qualify for a Women's World Cup but finished fourth in the CONCACAF standings with the top three teams earning a trip to Canada in 2015.
Ecuador, for its part, is also looking to break through for the first time since the quadrennial women's World Cup began in 1991, when it was held in the then-Soviet Union.
"I want to deliver the message to you all to continue supporting us, to continue supporting women's soccer, (to tell you all) that this (women's soccer) is going on. And we are going to give Ecuador what it has wanted all this time: we're going to make history, we're going to qualify for the first time. Yes we can," Ecuadorian player Andrea Vera told Reuters.
Ecuador finished it's qualifying for Canada in third place in the South America region with only the top two teams getting an automatic berth.
The teams will meet again in Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago on December 2.
