England defeated Luxembourg nine goals to nil in a European Soccer Championship match played at London's Wembley Stadium on December 15. Luxembourg were completely outclassed by the England team which had the run of the ball almost throughout the match. Goalkeeper and captain Jeannot Moes was the only Luxembourg player to contribute a creditable challenge the England's domination of the play. Luxembourg had forced a corner on one occasion and survived 18 minutes without conceding a goal. However, once Marcel Bossi turned the ball past his own goalkeeper for England's opening goal in the 17th minute, Luxembourg's flimsy defence fell apart. Luther Blissett scored a hat-trick and Tony Woodcock, Steve Coppell, Phil Neal, Mark Chamberlain and Glenn Hoddle joined in the goal-kicking spree. England, with five points from their opening three qualifying games, must now be regarded as favourites to win Group Three and claim a place in the finals in France in 1984.
