- Story Text: Jordan have beaten Iraq 3-1 in a penalty shootout
after the sides had drawn 4-4 in the final of the soccer
tournament at the Arab Games.
The host nation Jordan retained their soccer crown at
the Arab Games by beating Iraq in an high scoring final on
Tuesday (August 31).
Jordan threw away a 4-0 lead as Iraq fought back to level
at 4-4.But they emerged victorious after winning the penalty
shootout 3-1.
More than 20,000 Jordan fans, which included Jordan's King
Abdullah II and members of the Royal family, breathed a huge
sigh of relief when Sufian Abdullah scored the winning penalty
to secure the Kingdom the gold medal.
Jordan went in at half time leading 1-0.They went ahead
from a the spot when Egyptian referee Jamal Ghandor awarded
Jordan penalty which Abdullah Abu Zama'a converted.
In the second half, Jordan scored three goals, two of them
by Badran Shkran in the 53rd and 69th minutes.The third goal
was scored by Iraqi defender Radi Shneishil in the 65th minute.
Jordan's 4-0 advanatge did not last long as Iraq launched
a series of concerted attacks to leave the home fans in a
state of shock.They scored four goals in less than 15 minutes to
equalise 4-4 and force the final into extra time.
Husam Fawzi scored in the 73rd and 76th minutes.A penalty
by Haider Mahmoud made it 4-3.Razzaq Frehan then equalised
for Iraq with three minutes of normal time remaining to send
the match into extra time.
There were no further goals in the extra half hour and the
game was resolved by the penalty shootout.
The Iraq players had three of their penalty kicks hit the
post and only scored one of the four penalty attempts.
Abdullah Abu Zama'a, Badran Shkran and Sufian Abdullah
scored for the Jordanian team, while Radi Shneishil scored
Iraq's only goal in the penalty shootout.
After the match Jordan fans took to the streets of Amman
to celebrate.
