- Story Text: Brazil's Under-20 football team turned the final of the
King's Cup tournament into a rout by thrashing North Korea 7-1
in Bangkok.
It was the most lop-sided final in the 30-year history
of the King's Cup soccer tournament.
A sparse crowd turned out for the game, played on Saturday
(February 27), in Bangkok's Rajamangala National Stadium.
Despite the promise of a close contest after North Korea
held Brazil to a 1-1 draw in the preliminary matches, the game
never lived up to its billing.
Stung by the earlier performance the Brazilians struck
early to wipe out any possibility of a repeat.
Their first goal came in the 13th minute after a flowing
move down the left which ended with Ronaldo Moreira slamming a
shot past North Korean goalkeeper Jang Jong-Hyok.
Seven minutes later Luis Schmidt headed home from close
range after another cross from the left.
The Koreans fought back bravely despite the double blow
and pulled a goal back on the half-hour with a header by Chon
Kwon from a corner kick.
But Brazil went further ahead with a superb free-kick from
the right edge of the penalty box 10 minutes before the break
from Thiago Silva Santos.
The Koreans continued to have their moments but it was
Brazil's day.
The national Under-20 squad showed the maturity and poise
finishing with four goals in the last half-hour through
Ronaldo (62 minutes), Rodrigo Gral (63 minutes) and Adriano
Pereira (74th and 90th minutes).
In the battle for third place, hosts Thailand pulled off a
strong 3-1 victory over Hungary.
Hungary scored first in the fifth minute through Mirko
Jovanovic but after that it was all Thailand who struck three
times to avenge their failure to reach the final after Hungary
held the hosts to a 3-3 draw in the preliminary round.
Thailand's goals came from Kanit Atcharayothin in the 59th
and 67th minute and from Tongchai Akarapong in the 63rd minute.
