- Story Text: Diego Maradona's Sevilla were held to a 1-1 draw away to Galatasaray in a friendly on Tuesday (March 2).
A capacity crowd turned out to welcome the Argentine star to Istanbul, hoping to catch a glimpse of his skilful play. Maradona did create a couple of nice moves for the Spanish side, livening up a rather lackluster match, but was unable to score.
Galatasaray took the lead with a goal by Gutschow after 2l minutes. But the celebrations were short lived as a minute later Sevilla equalised through Suker.
Thirty-two-year-old Maradona may play for Turkey's Galatasaray soccer team next year if he does not renew his contract with FC Sevilla.
Frustrated by the form of his Spanish team, Maradona wants to play for a team in contention for a league championship.
Galatasaray, one of Turkey's leading teams, is currently in third place in the first division, three points behind the league leaders Fenerbahce.
Turkish newspapers reported Galatasaray officials as being eager and optimistic for the recruitment of Maradona, who "might be a bit expensive but has proven his worth through the points he keeps winning for his new club."
