Summary:A mass rally of French socialists on November 21 1977 opened the election campaign in which the French Left hoped, at last, to gain a powerful majority. Led by Francois Mitterrand, the Socialists were the biggest and most powerful of French political parties and it looked as if M. Mitterrand might cap a thirty-year career by becoming his country's Prime Minister. But when France went to the polls in March 1978, it rejected him once again.
