Summary:On December 4 1977, there occurred one of the more bizarre events of modern Africa - the coronation of self-styled Emperor Bokassa of the Central African Empire. Bokassa, who seized power in 1966, spent an estimated 40 million dollars on fabulous crowns for himself and his wife. From a huge golden throne he ruled a people whose average annual income was 150 dollars.
