Summary:Thousands of people of Chinese origin left Vietnam. They claimed that a persecution campaign was being waged against them by the Vietnamese authorities, and fled across the northern border into China. In having a friendly country at hand to go to, these refugees were more fortunate than others, who have left Vietnam and spent weeks crammed in small boats, hoping to be picked up, and waiting for some country to take them in.
