Title:Japan: Demonstrations At The Opening Of Narita Airport
Date:20th May 1978
Summary:Tokyo's controversial new airport was officially opened on May 20, 6 years after the original scheduled date. It had aroused strong opposition from local farmers whose case was taken up by militant ecologists and left-wing students. It took a major security operation to get the airport functioning. Right up to the last minute, and even afterwards, protestors kept up a campaign of sabotage and demonstrations.
