Summary:A short-lived rebel invasion of Shaba, the southern province of Zaire, occurred in May. French Legionnaires and Belgian paratroopers were flown in, primarily to rescue about two thousand Europeans trapped in the mining town of Kolwezi. But they arrived too late to save the lives of about two hundred of them, who perished in ten days of killing and looting. Undisciplined Zaire troops as well as the invading rebels were blamed.
