- Story Text: Hundreds of displaced Bangladeshi sex workers
have held a protest march in the capital Dhaka demanding
their rehabilitation.
Over 1,000 Bangladeshi sex workers on Thursday (March
30) demonstrated in Dhaka demanding their immediate
rehabilitation.
In July last year, police evicted hundreds of sex workers
from the century-old Tan Bazaar brothel in Narayanganj
district near Dhaka.
"Rehabilitate us" and "Implement court verdict", the sex
workers, several of them in veils, chanted.
The high court has termed the eviction "illegal" and ruled
that they should be allowed to practice their profession so
that they can earn their livelihood.
Advocate Sigma Huda, who pleaded for the evicted sex
workers, said that the women had been illegally evicted and
that they were not vagrants.Keeping them confined in vagrant
homes was against their rights, she said.
The demonstration was organised by "Sanghati", a
federation of feminist organisations.
Members of several human rights organisations staged plays
to highlight the plight of sex workers.
The sex workers later staged a protest march.
