  • Story Text: A delegation of high-ranking officials from Bangladesh arrived in India on Tuesday (7 September) to discuss a dam which India has built on the Ganges River.

    SYNOPSIS: The seven-member group was met by India's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mr. Jagjivan Ram and senior officials of his Ministry. India built the dam, called the Farraka Barrage, just inside its territory to divert the Ganges into the River Hooghly, which flushes the Calcutta port. Bangladesh claims the dam has affected farm irrigation and river navigation.

    Bangladesh's delegation is led by the Deputy Chief Martial Law Administrator in charge of flood control and water resources, Rear-Admiral M.H. Khan. Talks on the dam were suspended after Dacca tried to raise the issue in the United Nations General Assembly. Then, last month, Bangladesh said it was ready to resume talks.

    India has called for a joint and objective study of the needs of the two countries in relation to the Ganges. It also wants the report to cover the effects of the Farraka in Bangladesh. India maintains the report would help the countries to share the river.

    In May this year some 300,000 people in Bangladesh staged a march to protest against the dam. India had threatened to use force if the marchers crossed into its territory, but the march was peaceful.
