- Story Text: Nearly 1,500 activists of a Bangladeshi Islamic party
took to the streets to protest against U.S.-led attacks on
Afghanistan, waving portraits of Osama bin Laden and chanting
"Death to America".
Members of the Islamic Constitution Movement marched
through the streets of Dhaka on Monday (October 8), burning
American flags and an effigy of U.S. President George W. Bush.
One of the Movement's leaders, Shah Iftekhar Tarik, called
for jihad against the United States, Britain, and any nation
that supported action against the Taliban or Afghanistan.
"We are Muslims. We will fight against USA, Inshallah.
Osama bin Laden is our leader. We will jihad against USA,
Britain and Western countries who fight against Taliban and
Afghanistan," he said to a crowd
of cheering supporters.
Police said they had tightened security around diplomatic
missions of the United States, Britain and other European
countries in Dhaka in the wake of the Afghan attacks.
No injuries or violence have yet been reported.
The caretaker government holding power in Bangladesh until
the new government of Begum Khaleda Zia takes charge next week
has said it was keenly following developments in Afghanistan.
Bangladesh's constitution provides for a special
caretaker government to take office in order to hold national
elections, and its mandate runs out on Wednesday (October 10).
The United States says Afghanistan is harbouring Osama
bin Laden, who is blamed for suicide attacks on New York and
Washington last month that killed around 5,600 people.
Bangladesh, one of the world's most populous Muslim
nations, had earlier offered the United States use of its
airspace, ports and other facilities in the event of an attack
on Afghanistan.
