- Story Text: India beat arch rivals Pakistan 3-2 on penalties in the
final to win the Prime Minister's Gold Cup international
hockey tournament in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Victory for India in Tuesday's (March 20) match came
during a penalty shoot-out after the score was tied 3-3 at the
end of the scheduled 70 minutes and 15 minutes of extra time.
In the final set of tie-breakers, India's Daljit Singh
scored with the team's fifth penalty after his Pakistani
counterpart Muhammad Nadeem's shot had bounced back from a
post.
India's skipper Baljit Singh Dhillon and Arjun Halappa had
scored with their penalties to give the team a 2-0 lead as
Pakistan's Sohail Abbas and Muhammad Sarwar missed.
But Pakistan levelled the score to 2-2 when Haider Hussain
and Waseem Ahmed scored.
Dhillon said the match could have gone either way.
"Today we played very good game and Pakistan also played
very good game. We missed chances. I think the game (of both
teams) is same. We played after long time. Both the teams
played attacking hockey. We both missed the chances and after
seven and a half minutes, the match was draw. In the
tie-breaker, our boys did a very good job," he said.
Dhillon was declared man of the tournament while Mohammad
Usman of Pakistan took the man of the match.
Egypt finished third after beating Japan 7-6 on penalties
after their play-off match ended 3-3.
The host nation Bangladesh took the fifth position with a
3-2 victory over Malaysia.
Scotland defeated China 1-0 in the seventh place play-off.
Ireland finished ninth and last.
