- Story Text: The vote counting proceeded slowly in the crucial U.P. poll. In two days of counting results for 332 seats had been announced and Mrs. Gandhi's party had captured 162 seats in a house of 424 seats Congress Party was thus in need of at least 51 more seats to secure absolute majority. But she can count on the support of 13 Communist candidates who had been also elected. The trend in U.P. has resulted from an year of high prices. In New Delhi party officials were worried because 1974 is the year of Presidential poll and state assemblies are major part of the electoral college that elects the President of India. U.P. is India's largest state.
