Summary:Some guide books describe Thailand's capital city, Bangkok as the Venice of the East. And in at least one major respect, it does resemble the Italian city, for both are sinking lower and lower into the sea each year. In October, 1978, there was evidence that, by the end of the 20th century, most of the city would be below sea level and there is a real danger of Bangkok being washed away.
