- Story Text: U.S. President George W. Bush and Iraq President Jalal Talabani discuss reconciliation legislation pending in the Iraq parliament.
Iraqi President Jalal Talabani met U.S. President George Bush at the White House on Tuesday (October 2) to discuss a trio of laws under consideration by the Iraq parliament which Bush administration regards as a critical landmarks before it can reduce significantly the American presence in Iraq.
Talabani told Bush that progress was being made on national reconciliation, following the agreement signed last August among Iraq's Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish leaders. Talabani also told Bush that the Iraq parliament was continue work on three pieces of legislation -- a bill to split oil revenue bill among Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds; a law to allow employees of Saddam Hussein's government to work in the new government; and legislation outlining procedures for provincial elections.
The talks between Bush and Talabani occurred as the U.S. Congress was considering Bush's request for nearly $200 billion more to fund the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Democrats intend to deny the request unless it is linked to a plan to bring home U.S. combat troops by January 2009. Such a strategy failed in previous votes.
