- Story Text: Former U.S. President George W. Bush visited an orphanage and a Peace Corps centre in the Zambian capital of Lusaka on Saturday (December 3) as part of a visit aimed at promoting health awareness programmes across Africa.
Bush had urged wealthy nations on Friday (December 2) to help poor countries by providing resources to fight cancer and AIDS in the continent.
On the second day of a two-day visit to Zambia has already visited the George Clinical Study Site to launch the initiative.
Accompanied by his wife Laura and their daughters, Jenna and Barbara, Bush did not comment on Amnesty International's call for his arrest for human rights violations during his presidency.
Amnesty says as president from 2001 to 2009, Bush authorized the use of waterboarding and other interrogation techniques that Amnesty and other human rights groups consider torture.
In February, rights groups said Bush cancelled a visit to Switzerland because of the threat of legal action against him for alleged torture. Organizers of that event said they were cancelling Bush's participation on security grounds,
not because of the criminal complaints.
Bush has defended the use of waterboarding -- which simulates the sensation of drowning -- on captured extremists as key to preventing a repeat of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States.
The U.S. Department of State had no immediate comment.
Bush was in Tanzania on Thursday (December 1) promoting HIV and malaria awareness programmes and will fly to Ethiopia on Sunday (December 4). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
