United States (U.S.) President George Bush challenged the Soviet Union on Tuesday to end arms shipments to Nicaragua's Sandinista government. Bush was speaking at a ceremony where he signed legislation authorising continued aid for Nicaragua's Contra rebels.
Bush said: "The Soviet Union must match its rhetorical support for the (Central American) peace process with concrete action to halt military aid, to end subversion in that region and promote genuine democracy in Nicaragua."
The U.S. administration has been pressing Moscow to reduce its presence in Central America and says the Kremlin's actions in the region will have a direct effect on U.S.-Soviet relations.
Bush said the Contra aid package, which could give the rebels nearly 50 million U.S. dollars in humanitarian aid in the next ten months, demonstrated a new bipartisan spirit in U.S. foreign policy.
