Summary:Soviet troops first entered Afghanistan in late December 1979: according to a new Afghan government, at its own request. Western estimates put the number at about 70,000 by mid-February. President Brezhnev said their presence was necessary because of foreign intervention, and when this stopped they would be withdrawn. At first, they confined themselves mainly to patrolling.
