- Title: Switzerland-Federal Republic Of Germany : Olympic Committee Refuse To Move Games Over Afghanistan
- Date: 1st March 1980
- Summary: Following President Carter's call for the Games to be moved from Moscow because of the USSR's occupation of Afghanistan, the International Olympic Committee announced it would not move or cancel the Games. Debate raged about political interference with sport. Chancellor Helmut Schmidt of West Germany was one of President Carter's strongest supporters. He won almost solid backing from the Bundestag and support from his national Olympic Committee. The national Olympic Committees of 85 countries decided to send teams, some against their own governments' wishes. About forty decided to stay away. Important sporting nations which stayed away from Moscow were Canada, Japan, Kenya, West Germany and USA. NOTE: Date is approximate.
