Summary:In Zimbabwe, Mr. Robert Mugabe was asked by the temporary governor, Lord Soames, to form a government, after his branch of the Patriotic Front had won a clear majority in new elections supervised by the British. The independence ceremonies on April 18th brought to an end nearly fifteen years of international ostracism of white-controlled Rhodesia. It left Mr. Mugabe with the problem of re-integrating rival guerrilla forces into the community.
