Summary:On 23 June, an aircraft piloted by the son of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Sanjay, crashed, and he was killed. After lying in state at Mrs Gandhi's home, his body was taken to be cremated on the banks of the river Jumna. Sanjay Gandhi had been far from popular politically. But shock, and sympathy for his mother, brought out crowds almost on the scale of those at the funeral of his revered grandfather, Pandit Nehru.
