- Story Text: Following Thursday's fierce air battle off the coast of Syria, one of the thirteen Syrian Mig-21 jet fighters Israel says it downed, crashed in the north of Lebanon, near the Syrian border.
Israel claims the conflict began when one of its patrols was attacked by Syrian fighters over international waters, off the Syrian coast. They claim that nine Mio's were downed in the initial encounter, with the loss of only one of their own jets. Israel further claims that an additional four Syrian jets were downed when they attacked Israeli jets protecting their crashed pilot. The Israeli pilot and one of the Syrian pilots were safely plucked from the water by an Israeli helicopter.
The Syrian description of the air battle differs markedly from that of Israel. Syria says the battle began when its fighters attempted to repel a patrol of Israeli fighters in its airspace. Syria acknowledges that they lost eight aircraft, but maintain that they also downed five Israeli 'planes.
