Summary:In Northern Ireland, on May 5, Bobby Sands was the first of 10 prisoners to die on hunger strike. They were all convicted of offences in support of their cause: an end to British rule and union with the Republic of Ireland. Their colleagues of the Provisional IRA gave them a soldier's burial. The hunger strikers were demanding to be treated as political prisoners, not criminals.
